During Chinese New Year celebrations, adults give lucky money in red envelops (also known as red packets) to children. In turn, children also give red envelopes to their elders to show gratitude and to wish them a long, healthy life. Follow the step-by-step guide below to make your own.
Fun Chinese New Year fact for kids: Did you know that red is the national colour of China? It represents happiness, good luck, success and good fortune. It’s used widely in important festivals and events such as weddings and Chinese New Year.
Make your own red envelope
You’ll need:
- The envelope template
- A red marker, crayon, or paint
- A gold marker, glitter, or paint
- Glue and clear sticky tape
Do this activity:
Click the image below to download your template. Print out the template onto white paper or card.
1. Colour in the red envelope. Use sparkly gold paint, glitter, crayon or a marker to colour in the Chinese fortune symbol.
2. Follow the solid outlines to cut out the envelope.
3. Fold along the dashed lines to assemble the envelope.
4. Glue the side and bottom tabs (as shown on the template).
5. Insert paper money and seal your envelope with clear tape.
