Digital Learning Day – Coding

Digital Learning Day celebrates the use of digital technology in learning and in particular, highlights innovative and forward-thinking technology for learning in the classroom. Digital learning includes many different tools and applications to support teachers and students, including online courses, digital content and a wide range of resources.

Digital Learning Day started as a way to ensure that all youth have access to high-quality digital learning opportunities no matter where they live. It’s about enhancing the role of a teacher by using modern day tools to improve the learning experience in schools and highlights great teaching practice and instructional technology programs that improve student outcomes.

At Learning Resources®, we have products that use technology to supplementand enhance lessons in the classroom, particularly lessons in coding.

Code & Go™ Robot Mouse Activity Set

This coding activity set has been specifically designed to engage and inspire primary children in STEM lessons to develop enthusiasm from a young age.

We sentour robot mouse to Emma Vanstone of Science Sparks to test out with a fewquestions, here is what she said:

How did you use the product?

For my five-year-old we used Colby the Robot Mouse to introduce the concept of programming. She foundthe direction cards very helpful and the process of planning, coding and thencorrecting her routes has been brilliant for improving her logic skills.

My eight-year-old was able to code Colby without the directioncards, which has been great for helping develop his spatial awareness andability to visualise directional changes, as well as working through theprocess of coding, checking and then amending his code if necessary.

What are the educational benefits of theresource?

The Robot Mouse Activity Set is great for improving logic, reasoning, directional skills and for practising following instructions, aswell as being an engaging and entertaining introduction to coding.

What is the long-term appeal of the resource?

Our Robot Mouse Activity Set comes out frequently without anyencouragement from me. Each time it’s played with the children find a new wayto explore the set, such as building their own obstacles for Colby or creatingtheir own layouts.

Would you recommend this product to a friend?

I would definitely recommend the Code & Go™ Robot MouseActivity Set. Its bright colours, easy to handle design and educationalbenefits make it a superb addition to any child’s collection of toys and games.

Botley® The Coding Robot Activity Set

This Botley® activity set is our next generation of coding robotand is the ideal introduction to coding. It Engages children as young as 5years old in a basic form of coding utilising step coding and logic.

Wesent Botley to Jo Moore, a reception year 1 teacher at Snettisham PrimarySchool in Norfolk.  Jo took Botley intoher school and allowed her children to play and explore the robot. This is whatshe had to say:

How was this product used within the classroom?

I introduced ‘Botley’ to the children as a whole class carpetsession. We discussed what ‘coding’ meant…’making a sequence to make somethingdo something’ and we looked at his basic functions. We set up a little courseand I gave the children the challenge to get the ball to the goal. We startedoff just programming in one-step instructions. Then after this we triedprogramming a sequence.

How did Botley support learning in the classroom?

Botley is a perfect way to introduce and developcoding with this age group (4 – 6). They absolutely loved how Botley looked andwere so engaged in the activity. Everyone wanted a turn and were sad when wehad to put it away for lunch! ‘Coding’ can be a tricky concept to explain toyoung children but is a requirement of the National Curriculum and essentialfor our modern technology, so Botley helps children to learn in a simpleeffective way.

Do you feel Botley supports your role as a teacher?

Yes, it’s a fantastic resource to introduce coding to thechildren. They can be very hands-on and active, learning the ideas of ‘coding’before they try more complex coding programmes on the computer or ipad.Everything comes in the box that you need so it doesn’t take any time at all toplan and set up.

Do you feel Botley will meet your requirements to teach the NationalCurriculum/Early Years Foundation Stage Framework?

Yes, for the EYFS children it covers the ‘Technology’ area of‘Understanding the World’ plus also enables them to begin to explore positionand direction which features in the ‘Mathematics.’

For the National Curriculum it is perfect for the ‘Computing’curriculum and has massive scope for how you can incorporate computing intomathematics to look at position and direction which features in ‘Geometry’.
