These DIY gift ideas for Mother’s Day from a few of our Instagram mums are just the thing to involve kids in making something meaningful that mum will treasure.
Try these Mother’s Day activity ideas
Sweetheart rice cereal treats from @squashedpickle
“I love rice cereal treats,” says Neha of @squashedpickle “These are a fun Mother’s Day activity to do together and a great way to teach kids simple cooking techniques. Make up the mix together and decorate.”
You’ll need:
- 20g butter
- 150g marshmallows (I used two kids of marshmallows, pink and white)
- 175g rice cereal
- 100g chocolate (optional)

Do this activity: In large saucepan melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted to a gooey consistency. Remove from the heat. Mix into the rice cereal and make sure it is completely coated. Use a buttered spatula to pack into a lined baking tray and chill. Cut out shapes, pop on sticks and decorate with melted chocolate and any topping you wish. Enjoy.

“This year, more than ever, mums deserve to be showered with love and attention on Mothering Sunday,” says Sheila from Rascals and Rainbows. “Between lockdowns, miserable weather, and the daily joys of home learning, it’s been a challenging time for us. Here’s my mum-approved simple craft idea for all those grateful kiddies to give their mums this Mother’s Day. This is one that my two girls completed with minimal help from me and they turned out beautifully.”
You’ll need:
- A3 white card
- Coloured paper
- Dinner forks
- Paints
- Glue stick
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
Do this activity: Fold the white card in half. On the front, draw the outline of a vase. Use a paintbrush to paint green stems coming out of the vase. Dip your fork into a tray of paint and then print tulip heads on the end of each stem. (I used a different fork for each colour. The paint washed off easily afterwards.)
Cut coloured paper into small pieces with scissors. (You could also rip tissue paper for this if you have little ones who haven’t mastered scissors yet.) Glue on the pieces to decorate your vase. Once dried, children can write a message to mummy inside their card or draw a picture. Tracing around a little hand is a sweet idea too if they are too young for artwork.
Mother's Day DIY lilies from Monika at @Mrs_McQuade
You'll need:
Note: Adult help needed to do this activity.
- Egg box
- Wire
- Paints
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
Do this activity: Begin by cutting out the parts of the carton that stick out most. These will be your lilies. Any leftovers can be used to add leaves. Freestyle. We used a carton from a box of 15 eggs.
Paint your lilies inside and out. Get creative with colours. We used pastel colours (you can find this brand on amazon). Or use any paints you already have and then let them dry.
Cut the wire in different lengths. We did anything around 20cm and 30cm to create different heights. Pierce the wire through the narrow part into the flower. At the tip of the wire create a circle to stop it from falling back out.
Use your hot glue gun to secure the wire to the inside of the flower and hold it in place for a minute to help it set. Repeat this for all the flowers. Use the hot glue gun to secure the leaves on the stems (if you're planning on adding these). Mrs McQuade at www.mumtomumblog.com suggests that you wrap your bouquet in paper or place it inside a cute jar!
