Tried & Tested: Penguins on Ice™ Maths Activity Set

Product rating: 5/5

About the Tester: Key Stage One teacher of a class of 23

About the resource

The Penguins on Ice Maths Activity Set helps to reinforce counting, patterning, sorting, operations, and base ten. The set features ten ice bars which can be connected in 2 ways: horizontally (to form a number line up to 100) and vertically (to for a hundred grid). There are also 100 plastic penguins in 10 colours that are perfect to teach children basic concepts like colour identification, matching, and identifying similarities and differences.

In addition to reinforcing early maths skills, these cool penguins also help children to develop their fine motor skills including: pincer grasp, eye-hand coordination, and finger and hand strength.

A Key Stage One teacher tested the Penguin on Ice Activity Set, read what she thought below.

What did you think of the concept?

Penguins-on-ice is a great product to help support the learning of early mathematical skills.

How did you use it?

I used this product during group work to support the children’s understanding of addition and subtraction within 10. The penguins are also on our maths shelves for children to access at any time.

How has it helped your teaching?

I used the penguins to support the learning of addition and subtraction within 10. However, I feel it can be used to support many KS1 maths objectives, including multiplication, division, arrays, number bonds to 10, multiples of 10, pattern work and I am sure there are many more.

What are the best features?

It’s great value for money. It can be used to support the teaching and learning of many different maths objectives and so can be used many times throughout the year.

How would you rate the long-term appeal?

I think this is a fabulous resource that can be used in many different ways. The resource is open ended so it will appeal to children long term.
