Trick-or-Treating Alternatives for Kids

Spooky DIY science Halloween activities

Unleash your inner mad scientist and enjoy some fun Halloween STEM activities together. Practical science experiments are the perfect Halloween activity. You’ll feel like wizards and witches as you create magical potions! Why not create some slime using household ingredients for some child-friendly super (natural) fun with our Yuckology! Slime Lab?

Put on a Halloween comedy show

Tickle that funny bone and make each other howl with laughter this Halloween. Get your little ones to come up with jokes of their own and enjoy a family comedy show. Here’s some examples to start:

  • What type of footwear do ghosts wear? Boo-oots!
  • What’s the best dessert to eat on Halloween? I-scream!
  • Who won the skeleton beauty contest? No-body!
  • What position do ghosts play in football? Ghoul-keeper!

Make some super (natural) snacks

Halloween is often associated with sugary treats — but there are plenty of mouth-watering, healthier recipes you can try. For example, clementines look fab as mini pumpkins. Add a small piece of celery on top as a stalk and serve as a fun mid-afternoon snack.

And although they do require some chocolate or toffee, making candy apples can be super enjoyable. Plus, you can control the amount of sugar! Use chopped nuts, dried fruit, and seeds instead of sprinkles and let your kids get creative as they make their own.

Have a family-friendly Halloween film festival

Enjoy a film night with a Halloween-theme. Stock up on Halloween snacks and treats, then snuggle up with blankets to watch your faves. There are plenty of child-friendly Halloween films available, but here are some spooky suggestions:

  • Monsters Inc.
  • Casper
  • Room on the Broom
  • Boxtrolls
  • Book of Life
  • Hotel Transylvania
  • Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Organise a Halloween scare-venger hunt

Scavenger hunts are always fun, so why not organise your very own Halloween scare-venger hunt? Hide sweets, fruit or small gifts in Halloween wrapping paper throughout the house. Or if you have access to a garden and the weather is good, why not hold it outside?

Decorate your home or space and write up some clues on orange paper. Once the hunt begins, play some spooky music for added atmosphere. The whole family can dress up in Halloween costumes to add to the fun too! Not keen on your little ones filling up on sugary treats? Replace the sweets with small pumpkins or squashes, then spend the evening making pumpkin recipes together.

Or go on a neighbourhood Halloween scare-venger hunt! Download this free Halloween scavenger hunt printable and see how many Halloween items you can find.

Get creative with some spooktastic Halloween crafts

Arts and crafts is ideal when the weather is too wet or cold for outdoor activities like trick-or-treating. Make decorations to help everyone get into the spirit of the Halloween season. Craft paper chains in Halloween colours and hang them in your windows or throughout your home. Let their imaginations run wild as they create their own ghoulies, ghosties, and monsters.

Or why not try out some eerie origami and learn how to fold and cut bats, pumpkins and witches hats? Let them get messy with paints or stick to pencils and crayons and make Halloween cards for family and friends.

Make a Halloween pumpkin

The pumpkin is the ultimate Halloween decoration. Get creative with your little ones and make your own. Carve your own or get out the paints and let them use it as a canvas!

Read our step-by-step guide on how to make a Halloween pumpkin. It includes some free pumpkin carving designs, and fab ideas on what to do with your pumpkin afterwards too. For additional fun, try out some kid-friendly pumpkin recipes or feed the seeds to the birds.
