Hello!

At the end of September we were busy bees here at Learning Resources, exhibiting some of our best selling and newest products at the Scottish Learning Festival in Glasgow and Childcare Expo: Childcare Show in Coventry.

First came the Scottish Learning Festival, which we have been exhibiting at now for 6 years. Helen jetted off to Scotland for the set up of our stand, and was then joined by John and Jo from the office ready to face the crowds of visitors.

Although the Festival was quiet on day one, the second day picked up and we enjoyed demonstrating some of our key products such as our new style counters and the latest addition to our Design & Drill range; Socket to Me.

A popular product at this year’s Scottish Learning Festival was our new Hot Dots PhonicBook Practice Cards. We had a pod dedicated to these products, with open packets and working pens so visitors could see for themselves how Hot Dots work and why they’re so popular! The Childcare Expo: Childcare Show was a first for us this year! We decided to exhibit at the show as it gives us the opportunity to branch out into a more Early Years focused show. Chilcare Expo is dedicated to Early Years, looking into both the Early Years Foundation Stage in primary schools and childminders alike. We were able to have a stand of all our key Early Years products, rather than a reduced selection at our more mainstream events.

Not only was this our first time at the Childcare Expo: Childcare Show, but it was the first show ever for the latest recruit of Learning Resources. Claire Caldairou joined the sales team in September as our International Sales Customer Relations Coordinator, and was whisked off to the show to get a taste of exhibiting some of our top early years products.

The favourite products at the Childcare Expo show were the new style counters! Our dedicated stand of counters attracted a lot of visitors who wanted to experience the counters hands-on! Also popular was the latest addition to the Smart Snacks range; Number Pops.

Resources to support the development of fine motor skills in early learners are always popular, and at this show it was the turn of our tweezers products. Both our Jumbo Tweezers and Gator Grabber Tweezers are ideal for use with early years, and our Squeezy Tweezers make a great new addition to the range.

How did you use the product?

To promote phonic knowledge, spelling and reading.Â Â Â

What did you like/dislike about the resource?

What I like about this resource is that it helps to refine motor skills, improve hand-eye co-ordination and strengthen the little muscles in childrenâ€™s hands. This will help them to hold a pencil correctly and for continued lengths of time.Â

Did the children enjoy using the product?

They loved using this product and didnâ€™t realise that they were learning at the same time. Â This is useful for special needs children and children that find it difficult to concentrate and sit still to learn. It allows them time to think about the next letter whilst screwing on the previous letter.

How would you rate the long term appeal of the resource?

I believe this is something I will be using for many years to come and that it will be a favourite for all of the children I teach (2-7 year olds).Â

Do you currently have any similar products within your setting?

This is completely unique and different from the current toys that I use. Â I have phonics puzzles, kids bingo games and lots of homemade resources but nothing like this.

How cost effective do you feel the resource is in terms of the results it delivers?

Very cost effective and great value for money.Â

Tried and Tested: All About Me Family Counters and Activity Cards

What were your initial thoughts about the appearance and function of the resource?

I love how brightly coloured they are and how easy they are to handle. Â You know from the outset that both the counters and cards are going to withstand being used over and over again (either at home or in the classroom). Â I was immediately struck by just how many ways the counters could be used on their own and then with the addition of the cards youâ€™ve ramped up the opportunities for learning even further.

How was this resource used at home?

We started off just sorting the counters by colour â€“ talking about their size and which family member they represented. Â We have also sorted them by type, grouped them into families, ordered them by size. Â Weâ€™ve practiced repeating patterns with the help of the Activity Cards and also looked at some simple algebra with the â€œmissing numberâ€ type calculations.

How could it be used in the classroom?

There are so many ways this could be used in the classroom. Â For talking about our families and who is in them. Â For sorting by colour, type. For grouping into families. For counting, for simple equations, for repeating patterns â€“ the list is endless!

What did you like/dislike about this product?

I love them. My only niggle is the storage pot could do with being a little sturdier but weâ€™ve just decanted them into a stronger lidded box

What are the educational benefits of the resource?

As a product which can be used independently, in groups or in a guided activity â€“ at home or in the classroom to cover such a range of early maths skills I think the benefits of this resource are huge.

How would you rate the long term appeal of this product?

Considering it has been played with by both my two year old and my seven year old I think there is a really good long term appeal to the product â€“ particularly when used in conjunction with the activity cards to work on simple algebra.
