The importance of outdoor play in all weather conditions

There is so much to be gained from playing outside. As discussed in our blog, Why is Outdoor Play Important for Children’s Development? playing outside helps with children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and language development. Most importantly, it’s fun and enjoyable for children of all ages.

Spending time outside all year round lets children experience how life changes from season to season. It makes what they learn about the world in the classroom and at home come to life as they engage with the outdoors using all their senses. Here are a few ideas for winter outdoor activities that encourage learning through play. So, dress warmly and let’s go outside!

Outdoor winter activities without snow

Try these ideas for winter outdoor activities without snow that will keep kids engaged and having fun outside.

  • Reimagine outdoor activities: Choose a fun activity and try it each season. Wonder what blowing bubbles is like in winter vs summer? Take some bubble mixture with you and find out! Make your own bubble mixture with our ultimate recipe and try our STEM rainbow bubble snake experiment. If it’s really cold outside, you may even make frozen bubbles!
  • Go on a winter scavenger hunt: Print out our free outdoor activity sheet, 50 Things to Find on a Nature Walk, and head outside.
  • Make an ice sun catcher: Gather up some natural craft supplies such as fallen leaves, berries, acorns, or twigs. Arrange in a silicone or aluminium pie dish. Add a drop of food colouring to water, pour over the design, and freeze overnight. The next day, wrap a long piece of twine around the circumference and tie securely. Pour over more water and freeze again overnight to secure the twine. Hang in a tree and watch how it thaws.
  • Take toys outside: Our GeoSafari range offers robust outdoor science learning toys that are ideal for outdoor play all year round. Science toys like our GeoSafari® Jr. Kidnoculars® are easy for little hands to hold even when wearing gloves during autumn and winter, and are made from robust materials, ready for any outdoor learning adventure. The 5-in-1 Outdoor Measure-Mate is another fun outdoor play toy that will get your child excited to play and learn outside and can be used for most of the year.
  • Make a winter garden wind chime: This easy activity uses twine and sticks and can even be a fun craft to try with toddlers (with some adult help). Choose five sticks of various lengths, and one long stick for the hanging piece. Tie a loop of twine around the top of each stick, and then tie that to the longer hanging stick. Then tie a length on either end of the hanging stick in order to hang it in a tree. You could even paint the chime sticks in bright colours to add a dash of colour to your winter outdoor space.

Winter outdoor activities for toddlers

Head outside and try these easy winter outdoor activities for toddlers:

  • Jump in puddles: Toddlers love to sploosh and splash in puddles at any time of the year. It’s also a fun way to keep them active and engaged when out on a walk.
  • Go to the park: Children love the physical activity and will enjoy all the park and outdoor play area activities they enjoy in the summertime such as climbing, jumping, and swinging.
  • Build a stick maze: When out on a winter walk, gather up sticks and lay out a maze on the ground. Help your toddler navigate through the maze.
  • Dig out the pavement chalk: Drawing fun designs using pavement chalk isn’t only for summer. Try drawing circles for your toddler to jump into. Or draw lines in multiple colours and give your child a paintbrush and some water to wet and mix the chalk.
  • Make an obstacle course: You could try this in your back garden or when walking in the woods using materials you find in your surroundings.
  • Bounce on a trampoline: If you have a trampoline, use it all year round. Your toddler will enjoy the physical activity.
  • Feed the wildlife: Pack an animal-friendly picnic and head out to feed your local wildlife. Avoid bread. According to experts, it isn’t a good food source for animals such as ducks. Rather pack foods like sweetcorn, peas, oats, and seeds in your wildlife picnic.

Tips to make outdoor winter play safe and enjoyable

Here are a few suggestions to make playing outside in cold weather safe and enjoyable for the whole family.

  • Wrap everyone up warmly, and make sure little feet are also snug and warm.
  • Wear the right footwear. Soggy toes will dampen the fun.
  • Pack lots of healthy snacks for hungry tummies.
  • Take a thermos of warming hot chocolate – it’ll be a welcome treat.
  • Do it regularly. The more familiar it feels, the more confident your child will be to try new things.
