Learn through fun outdoor play!
Playing outside is an essential part of a child's development. From making mud kitchens, to getting to know nature, learning and playing outside will help little learners form key developmental skills such as physical health & self-confidence!

The benefits of outside learning

My daughter ‘Squirt’ loves being outside, she’ll happily play for hours in the garden, at the beach, and she loves nothing more than a play park! She enjoys it so much; it’s easy to sneak in some fun learning activities without her even noticing she’s learning!

We all know the benefits of being outside; fresh air, exercise, vitamin D and the boosts to children’s immunity, needless to say how much extra space there is out there! Whether it’s the school playground or at home in your back garden, the activity ideas and resources are endless! My niece particularly enjoys the 'jumpoline’ (trampoline!) and we can see her coordination and balance have already improved.

Toys that require new skills, encourage the development of self-confidence and encourage exploration. I gave 'Squirt’ some Helping Hands Fine Motor Tools to use outside in her sand and water tray to improve her motor skills & build the strength in her hands. She’s learning scissor skills at nursery, so I thought the Handy Scoopers would help. Well the learning didn’t stop there! She explored the entire garden with the Handy Scoopers to see what was small enough to fit through the holes! Stones, soil, insects and flowers were all tested out and it became a little measuring activity!

This set combines four of our finest Learning Resources tools, great for children as young as 2. They’re great for encouraging exploration both inside and out.

Teachers, with the new curriculum coming into place in September, are you planning more outside learning at your education setting? We’d love to hear your ideas for taking your lessons outside!

We have some great resources for taking hands-on learning outside, and you can view the entire range of outdoor play resources on our website. Dino Construction Companyâ„¢ vehicles have been very popular with both parents and teachers for outside learning and play. They are powered by children, so not motorised or controlled by a remote. There are four different dino vehicles in the set; Wrecker the T-Rex Skid Loader, T-Top the Triceratops Bulldozer, Spike the Ankylosaurus Steam Roller and Boom the Brachiosaurus Backhoe! Each dinosaur features a range of hand-powered mechanisms and the dinosaur track treads are great for making tracks in sand or dirt!

Mummy Blogger, Mummy Bird provided us with her review of Wrecker the T-Rex Steer Loader. Not only did her son love it, but her daughter did too! Little Bird even tried out the dino vehicle helping to dig up his Nanny’s patio! The full review can be found on her blog at mummybird.com

Make the most of outside learning and get the little ones outside!

Until next time…

Enjoy picnics come rain or shine!

We’re well and truly into picnic season now, and I hope you’ve got some fab picnics coming up! Let’s hope the weather is on our side, and we’re not faced with too many rainy days this summer. I remember inside picnics when I was little, my mum would set a blanket out on the living room floor, and we’d have lots of various snacks in little wicker baskets! It was just as much fun as an outside picnic, however we weren’t allowed to play with the frisbee for some reason!

I’m sure you’d all agree that an outside picnic is far more exciting than an inside one (frisbee or no frisbee), but in case we do have to dodge the showers this summer, have a look at our New Sprouts Picnic Set. The set includes everything needed to have a great inside picnic, including squirting ketchup and mustard bottles (my favourite bit!) and slices of watermelon.

image

As our New Sprouts range is specially designed for little hands, this Picnic Set is great for children from just 2 years old. View our entire New Sprout range. Squirt is almost 4 now, but is a massive fan of the New Sprouts range, particularly the chunky, whimsical play food sets.

Are you a Special Needs Practitioner? Or a parent of a child with additional needs? The Picnic Set, along with many other products in the New Sprouts range have many surprising special needs applications and can be used to support a diverse range of additional needs. They’re great for supporting fine motor skill development, and speech & language development when used as a visual prompt.  On our website we have a whole section dedicated to supporting Special Educational Needs.

image

Are you one of our Facebook Fans? Over on our Facebook Fan Page today we’re having a competition to win the  Picnic Set from our New Sprouts range.  Simply like and share our competition post, then comment to let us know where your favourite picnic location is!

image

We’re lucky here at the Learning Resources offices being  just a quick drive away from the Royal Sandringham Estate, which is a very popular location for picnics. Not one of our Facebook Fans yet? Then what are you waiting for? Head over there and give us an add! We’re also on Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and Instagram! - follow us now for all our news, reviews and competitions!

I'm having a mental block!

We’ve been getting our brains working in the Learning Resources office this week, challenging each other to a go at the Mental Blox challenge! This critical thinking challenge game contains activity cards to promote strategic thinking and memory skills, as players re-create the image on the card (to be kept out of sight - no cheating!!) This challenge is certainly not as easy as it looks! Were those stripes horizontal or vertical? Was it purple on green or green on purple?

Our Mummy Blogger friend Donna from the Mummy Bird blog sent us a great review when her and her daughter ‘Big Bird’ took on the Mental Blox challenge. They liked to play it with the whole family in teams, but it can also be played individually.  A great challenge for all ages!

Fancy taking on the challenge yourself? Take a look at Mental Blox on our website. There are sample cards and an activity guide to download, see if you can handle it! Already played it? Let us know what you thought.

We had a lot of fun doing this in the office, nothing better on a Friday than a bit of brain boosting! This game is great for children who need a challenge, or perhaps just need a quick break in between lessons.

Quick breaks are ideal for keeping children on the learning track! Jo, our 'education expert’ has years of classroom experience and says if children look like they are tired or struggling to concentrate, take a break! Play a game, do some brain gym or have a run around on the playground. Doing this means they can feel refreshed and get stuck back into learning! To keep your children or students engaged, give them a quick break with these fun Learning Resources boredom busting games.

  • iTrax Critical Thinking Game
  • Magic Moves Wand - great for younger children!
  • Wild About Animals Ready, Set, Roar! Classroom Activity Set

  • Marco’s Polos
  • Frida’s Fruit Fiesta Alphabet Game
  • Robot Face Race

  • Raccoon Rumpus
  • Diggity Dogs &  Kitten Caboodle

Get your brain boosted this weekend!

Incy Wincy Spider...

Hello bug lovers!

It’s National Insect Week and time to learn about all things creepy crawly! The week’s official website lists a range of events happening for you to get involved in wherever you are in the UK, take a look at www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk

image

Here at Learning Resources we have a whole collection of bug-themed resources to suit even the youngest of minibeast fans! Great for classroom use and outdoor use, both at home and school!

My 3 year old daughter (aka Squirt) and I have been learning about bugs this week, being a little girl butterflies are her favourite! We’ve made paper butterflies, sang Incy Wincy Spider and had a go at drawing bugs! Squirt’s not one for getting her hands dirty, so yesterday we had a look at the GeoSafari Jr Talking Bug Net. She particularly liked ‘catching’ the minibeasts in the net, which then set the net off talking about the insect she had put in it - clever stuff!

image

Once we’d been playing for a while and were getting good at identifying the bugs, we turned the net to quiz mode! We had good fun answering the questions which quickly  turned into a race! Squirt isn’t competitive…much! There are 60 questions, so plenty to keep us entertained. Squirt was having so much fun, she didn’t even know she was learning! The Talking Bug Net encourages counting and colour recognition, not to mention all the interesting bug facts. Did you know that a queen bee can lay 3,000 eggs in one day?! - Busy Bee!

image

I love the range of products that we do here at Learning Resources on the topic of insects and minibeasts, and the Talking Bug Net was certainly a favourite in our household. The net comes with:

  • a praying mantis
  • a spider
  • a ladybug
  • a grasshopper
  • a bee
  • and a butterfly!

 image

We hope you enjoy National Insect Week, get in touch to let us know what you’re up to! You can see our collection of bug-themed resources at www.LearningResources.co.uk. For young bug lovers, have a look at the Snap-n-Learn Number Bugs, Colour Caterpillars and Shape Butterflies, great for children aged 2+.

Calling all teachers, parents and lovers of learning!

Welcome to the first ever blog post on the first ever Learning Resources UK blog!

Here we’ll share with you some educational tips, product news and all things we’re passionate about here at LRUK! Providing hands-on, educational toys, games and resources to teachers, parents and educational professionals is at the heart of what we do, visit www.LearningResources.co.uk to have a look! Our products tap into children’s natural curiosity. From maths to science to literacy, lessons come to life in three dimensions, sparking an interactive learning process. Using hands-on learning resources, children take ownership of their learning.

We recently celebrated our 20th Anniversary, and what a lovely celebration it was too. Our Managing Director, Dennis, has been with the company since it was founded in 1994, and amongst other festivities was presented with a rather trendy lamp for the desk in his office here in Norfolk!

image

Dennis is certainly the key to driving our passion for kinaesthetic learning, wanting to add an “aha!” element to each and every one of our products. He believes there’s a moment that will make any parent or teachers’ day; the moment when a child’s eyes light up as they finally understand a concept, or solve a problem - the “aha” moment!

From our 20th Anniversary and beyond we’re looking to the future, at the next 20 years of Learning Resources UK and the help and support we can continue to provide teachers, parents and everyone who’s passionate about education, just like us! Our hands-on learning approach isn’t new, but it’s the way we learn from the moment we are born, by moving and manipulating the world around us we make sense of how things work. Study after study have proved this, and more importantly children have proved it too. We understand the challenges that children and teachers face, and every solution we create is designed to help children unlock a greater understanding, from their first day at preschool.

We’re proud of where we’ve been, and we’re excited about where we’re going! We hope we can help you discover “aha” moments with your little ones! Keep an eye out for future blog posts on developments, excitement and celebrations at LRUK.
