Fashion in schools

Many schools have strict guidelines as to what students can and can’t wear. Some schools even state the colour of socks the students are to wear! Having worked in schools myself, I understand the importance of uniformity, especially during school trips and when visitors are coming to schools. However, I’m now finding myself on the other end of the argument with Squirt. She is no longer happy wearing comfy, practical clothes to nursery - instead wanting to wear dresses, with matching leggings and her hair down! I encourage her to keep her hair tied up so it’s out of her face, especially as her hair has a mind of its own as you can see!imageSquirt is very nearly 4 now, and will be starting school next year. Although she doesn’t have to wear a uniform yet, the discussions we’ve been having about what’s practical clothing for nursery really got me thinking about the importance, or unimportance of fashion in institutions such as schools, brownies and church groups.I remember back to when I was at high school, a time in my life I really enjoyed. But it didn’t come without pressures from fashion magazines, TV and of course, peer pressure. The fashions then were Adidas Popper Trousers - if you were caught not wearing these on a non-uniform day, you quickly lost a ‘cool point’ from the 'it crowd’. However there were also things that could be tied into school uniform, such as Kickers Shoes, funky neck-tie knots and hair plastered with hairspray and tied up with at least 3 scrunchies!imageHaving grown up and started to bring up my own daughter, these trends, pressures and fashions all seem rather silly. However at the time, they were anything but silly to me and my friends. An article from The Guardian 'What’s the point of school uniform’ considers the uniform debate from both sides. I agree with the point made by English Teacher, Claire Howlette, that “uniforms help students to prepare for when they leave school and may have to dress smartly or wear a uniform”.School uniforms can improve learning by reducing distraction, encouraging a focus on school work and adding a sense of seriousness to the classroom. An article from ParentMap.com says that schools with uniform guidelines see an improvement in attendance rates, provide less financial stress to parents and a boost in school security. I believe a lot of students, especially high school students, understand and respect uniform guidelines, however they want to develop their own personality and creativity, and for many this is expressed through their appearance.imageMaybe there will never be a happy medium, and perhaps this deviance is an important part of the growing up phase! Many students are relatively respectful of their schools rules and expectations, and understand (to some extent) the practicality of clothes as well as style. As a parent I will encourage this as Squirt gets older, but should also keep in mind the pressures I felt as a student.Until next time…Laura

Our Toy Testing Team

2014 has seen the birth of our Toy Testing Team here at Learning Resources! We’re intrigued by the world of mummy blogging which seems to be spreading like wild fire! Us, along with many other brands recognise the importance of hearing exactly what parents think of our products and how we can continually improve them.

image

We set up our Toy Testing Team earlier this year, a network of mummy bloggers we know we can trust and rely on for honest feedback about the quality, suitability and educational support that our products offer. Whilst we love hearing positive things about our resources, we understand things aren’t perfect. We ask that our Toy Testing Team provide us with constructive reviews and, if there are some problems, we can feed this back to our Product Development team.

Some of the mummy bloggers we currently work with include:

image

Our blogger specialist, Helen Ferri Wilson works closely with our vast network of bloggers. Helen established a relationship with the mummy blogosphere nearly three years ago and has kept abreast of developments in the ever changing environment of blogging. We soon discovered mummy bloggers are influencers providing impartial and honest advice to their readers. Helen said ‘It’s been important for us to tell the Learning Resources story and the response to our toys, games and learning aids has been extremely positive. We offer an appealing range of toys ALL with added learning value making us differ from many mainstream toy brands. The most rewarding situations are helping children to develop in an area of learning they’ve struggled with; the biggest surprise to the blogger is their children haven’t noticed they’re learning as they’ve been having so much fun!’

If you’re a blogger and interested in joining the Learning Resources Toy Testing Team, send Helen an email at hferri@learning-resources.co.uk to find out more. Alternatively view our Blogger Media Pack for more information about us as a company and our partnerships with mummy bloggers!

Playday - The National day for play

Today is National Playday! On the first Wednesday in August each year individuals and communities across the UK celebrate Playday in a number of different ways! Past events have included celebrations such as street parties, mass woodland adventures and festivals in parks, each community that takes part adapts the celebration to suit them!

image

We all know how important it is for children to be allowed to play, it is vital for their health, well-being and development. Playday supporters hope to raise awareness about the importance of play in children’s lives and persuade councils, boroughs and decision-makers to continue to support playgrounds and play centres nationwide.

Here at Learning Resources we understand the need for children to have fun! Many of our hands-on resources are made to encourage learning through play for children from birth. We are passionate about children’s education, and want our products to support not only their learning and development, but also their well-being.

We have 4 product promises that we adhere to with each and every product that we manufacture, and one of which is…we make it fun!

image

I encourage you to celebrate play today! If there isn’t a Playday event in your area, then do your own thing, no matter how big or small it is! Squirt and I will be going to the park near our house later to make the most of Playday. It’s great to have a park so close, we know we’re lucky to have it as many people don’t have one in walking distance!

Playday have even shared some great rainy day ideas to encourage people to get out and play no matter what the weather is like! We can’t always rely on the sun here in the UK, so here are Playday’s ideas for wet days!

  • The Great Mud Pie Contest
  • Rainy Rhymes - how many can you come up with?
  • Waterslide Madness! Have tarpaulin to hand? Just add washing up liquid!
  • Puddle Stomping and Wellie Wanging

And when you’re already soaked from the rain…

  • Water balloon contests
  • Water spongers for a game of Torrential Tag!

Whatever you get up to today, make it fun!

 Until next time…

Rainy days and Mondays

Hello!

How’s the weather holding up in your part of the world this summer? Hopefully you’ll be basking in sunshine, and only having to dodge the odd shower here and there!

If, on the other hand you’re housebound by torrential rain, and the rainy days and Mondays are getting you down, take a look at my top picks from Learning Resources for inside summer fun below!

Indoor Summer Fun Resources:

  1. Magic Moves® Jammin’ Gymâ„¢
  2. Marco’s Polosâ„¢
  3. Space Spinnersâ„¢ Game
  4. iTraxâ„¢ Critical Thinking Game

  1. Chef Showdownâ„¢ Game
  2. New Sprouts® Shop it!
  3. Design & Drill® Socket to Me™
  4. Candy Constructionâ„¢

  1. Frida’s Fruit Fiesta Gameâ„¢
  2. Robot Face Raceâ„¢ Colour & Attribute Game
  3. Diggity Dogsâ„¢ Attribute Game
  4. Kitten Caboodleâ„¢ Attribute Game

Often when it’s wet, my +1 and I take Squirt to our local soft play centre, she absolutely loves it. While these kind of centres can often be crowded, hot and noisy for parents, they have some great benefits for the youngsters using them. They’re designed with children’s safety in mind, and offer a great space for children to practise their social and communication skills with the other children using the centre. The fun climbing equipment is great for developing physical and coordination skills! Parents can sit and have a cup of tea, knowing that their children are happy, safe, and learning!

Libraries are also great places for rainy days! Squirt loves books, and for many children it’s so exciting being able to choose some books to take home - and the parents don’t have to worry about the price tag! Lots of libraries also offer events throughout the summer too, I keep an eye out in our local paper for these kind of happenings. Reading books is great for children, but you knew that already! It helps to improve focus and concentration, and develop imagination. Reading a variety of books, including fiction and non-fiction broaden children’s understanding of the world and increases their vocabulary. For children that really hate or struggle with reading, there a variety audio books that grasp their imagination. Also for reluctant readers, take a look at our Hot Dots® resources.

Despite these suggestions for getting us all through wet spells, it’s time to be optimistic! Let’s hope the weather will be warm and sunny, with lots of opportunities to play outside. I’d love to know what you’re getting up to this summer, get in touch below and let me know about what you have done so far!

Until next time…

We're growing up green

Here at Learning Resources we do our best to reuse and recycle, we know it’s important to take care of the world around us and keep it clean for the generations of little learners that are inheriting it from us!

image

We are proud distributors of over 20 Green Toysâ„¢ products, the 100% recycled alternative to traditional plastic toys! Let me tell you what makes Green Toys great:

  • All products are made from 100% recycled plastic and other environmentally friendly materials.
  • Even the packaging is fully recyclable and easy to open (with no twist ties!)
  • All Green Toys products contain no traceable amount of Phthalates, BPA or PVC.
  • No external coatings or paints are used on the products.
  • All Green Toys vehicles have no metal axles, so the toys can be recycled too!
  • Green Toys kitchen sets are all dishwasher safe!

The Green Toysâ„¢ Tugboat is good for the earth and for the youngsters who play there! It’s a very popular product, and many parents have told me that they use it to wash their children’s hair in the bath! The tugboat is suitable for play from just 6 months. We’re not the only people who think the Green Toysâ„¢ Tugboat is great, it was voted as one of the best eco toys by The Independent!

image

My personal favourite is the Green Toysâ„¢ Tractor! Living in the rural county of Norfolk, we see a lot of tractors out and about, and this little recyclable one is great! With its chunky tyres and detachable trailer little farmers can really let their imaginations grow!

image

Recycling can be linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage, including Understanding of the World, Expressive Art and Design and Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy. There are many activities that can be done at home and in the classroom to get little minds inspired by recycling and the environment. Here are some ideas that Jo, our ‘Educational Expert’ used during her time in the classroom:

  • Go for an 'environment’ walk around your school or local area. Talk about the importance of recycling and putting rubbish in a bin on the animals in our environment.
  • If you are lucky enough to have an allotment/ vegetable patch at your school you could begin composting left over fruit skins and cores from snack time whilst teaching children the benefits of doing so. You could also set up a recycling station within the classroom for other items such as paper and plastics. You could have weekly 'recycling monitors’ as children love taking ownership and feeling like they are doing an important job.

For smaller spaces, our Now You See It, Now You Don’t See-Through Compost Container is a great visual composting resource!

  • Have some fun and create recycled junk models. Use unwanted cartons, paper, boxes, clothes etc to make all kinds of crazy models!
  • Make a recycling collage! Let their imaginations run wild about the picture they are going to create or link it to your current topic!
  • Michael Recycle & Litterbug Doug books. Read the books, discuss and then children could make a poster all about recycling and looking after our world.

image

  • For some 3D shape development, encourage the children to sort the recycling into different 3D shapes! This allows for real-life problem solving.
  • Recycling treasure hunt! Hide lots of things around the classroom/ playground that could be recycled. Provide the children with recycling containers labelled plastic, cardboard, paper and fabric then let them hunt and sort!
  • Musical recycling! Have hoops around the room containing objects that need to be recycled plus the 4 recycling containers ( plastic, cardboard, paper and fabric). When the music stops children have to grab an item to be recycled, correctly place it in the correct recycling container and be the first to sit down!

Parents, do you recycle? Let me know what recycling you and your family do at home. For more information on recycling, visit the Recycle Now website; recyclenow.com.
