Learning Resources

Getting your 5 a day

This time of year is great for exploring what fruit and vegetables are around, either produced locally or rife in supermarkets. The upcoming summer holidays will see many families out picking their own fruits and veggies in the local fields or at home in the back garden! The NHS are keen for us all to get at least five pieces of fruit and veg in everyday, there are adverts on TV about it all the time! Unfortunately it’s not always as easy as it seems to get children (or adults!) to eat the recommended five portions, as some are picky about them or just won’t touch them full stop!imageStudies have shown that the earlier youngsters are introduced to a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, the more likely they are to welcome these foods into their diets. Including play food in imaginative play could be the key to exposing children to fruit and veg as early as possible. It introduces children to the colour and shape of fruit and vegetables, perhaps before their palate is quite ready for the taste! Play food has always been around, and it something that has improved in quality over the years and is now a lot more realistic!imageWe have a range of hands-on role play resources, known as New Sprouts®. It was specially designed for little hands and is perfect for children as young as 2. The New Sprouts® range features a lot of play food, and loads of great ideas for role playing with fruit and vegetables. The Deluxe Market Set includes a bushel of fruit and veggies that might be found on a local market stall, and the Fresh Picked Fruit & Veggie Tote includes a huge amount of fruit and veg in a canvas bag that looks just like it been picked!imageOlder children can start preparing their fruit and vegetables with the Pretend & Play® Sliceable Fruits & Veggies that even come with a chopping board and play knife.imageThe LiveWell section of the NHS website has some great tips about including fruit and vegetables into your weekly meals and snacks. One of my favourite ideas on the site was to allow your children to pick one fruit or vegetable during the weekly shop and let them see the process from shop to table! Supervise them while they prepare it, cook it and serve it! Squirt luckily doesn’t need much encouraging when it comes to fruit and veggies, but this is certainly something I will be doing with her!Variety is the key! My +1’s mum is from Jamaica so I’m often introduced to fruit and vegetables I have never even heard of before. Most of them, I must say are absolutely delicious.Until next time…Laura

I'm having a mental block!

We’ve been getting our brains working in the Learning Resources office this week, challenging each other to a go at the Mental Blox challenge! This critical thinking challenge game contains activity cards to promote strategic thinking and memory skills, as players re-create the image on the card (to be kept out of sight - no cheating!!) This challenge is certainly not as easy as it looks! Were those stripes horizontal or vertical? Was it purple on green or green on purple?

Our Mummy Blogger friend Donna from the Mummy Bird blog sent us a great review when her and her daughter ‘Big Bird’ took on the Mental Blox challenge. They liked to play it with the whole family in teams, but it can also be played individually.  A great challenge for all ages!

Fancy taking on the challenge yourself? Take a look at Mental Blox on our website. There are sample cards and an activity guide to download, see if you can handle it! Already played it? Let us know what you thought.

We had a lot of fun doing this in the office, nothing better on a Friday than a bit of brain boosting! This game is great for children who need a challenge, or perhaps just need a quick break in between lessons.

Quick breaks are ideal for keeping children on the learning track! Jo, our 'education expert’ has years of classroom experience and says if children look like they are tired or struggling to concentrate, take a break! Play a game, do some brain gym or have a run around on the playground. Doing this means they can feel refreshed and get stuck back into learning! To keep your children or students engaged, give them a quick break with these fun Learning Resources boredom busting games.

  • iTrax Critical Thinking Game
  • Magic Moves Wand - great for younger children!
  • Wild About Animals Ready, Set, Roar! Classroom Activity Set

  • Marco’s Polos
  • Frida’s Fruit Fiesta Alphabet Game
  • Robot Face Race

  • Raccoon Rumpus
  • Diggity Dogs &  Kitten Caboodle

Get your brain boosted this weekend!

Until next time…

Incy Wincy Spider...

Hello bug lovers!

It’s National Insect Week and time to learn about all things creepy crawly! The week’s official website lists a range of events happening for you to get involved in wherever you are in the UK, take a look at www.nationalinsectweek.co.uk

image

Here at Learning Resources we have a whole collection of bug-themed resources to suit even the youngest of minibeast fans! Great for classroom use and outdoor use, both at home and school!

My 3 year old daughter (aka Squirt) and I have been learning about bugs this week, being a little girl butterflies are her favourite! We’ve made paper butterflies, sang Incy Wincy Spider and had a go at drawing bugs! Squirt’s not one for getting her hands dirty, so yesterday we had a look at the GeoSafari Jr Talking Bug Net. She particularly liked ‘catching’ the minibeasts in the net, which then set the net off talking about the insect she had put in it - clever stuff!

image

Once we’d been playing for a while and were getting good at identifying the bugs, we turned the net to quiz mode! We had good fun answering the questions which quickly  turned into a race! Squirt isn’t competitive…much! There are 60 questions, so plenty to keep us entertained. Squirt was having so much fun, she didn’t even know she was learning! The Talking Bug Net encourages counting and colour recognition, not to mention all the interesting bug facts. Did you know that a queen bee can lay 3,000 eggs in one day?! - Busy Bee!

image

I love the range of products that we do here at Learning Resources on the topic of insects and minibeasts, and the Talking Bug Net was certainly a favourite in our household. The net comes with:

  • a praying mantis
  • a spider
  • a ladybug
  • a grasshopper
  • a bee
  • and a butterfly!

We hope you enjoy National Insect Week, get in touch to let us know what you’re up to! You can see our collection of bug-themed resources at www.LearningResources.co.uk. For young bug lovers, have a look at the Snap-n-Learn Number Bugs, Colour Caterpillars and Shape Butterflies, great for children aged 2+.

Calling all teachers, parents and lovers of learning!

Welcome to the first ever blog post on the first ever Learning Resources UK blog!

Here we’ll share with you some educational tips, product news and all things we’re passionate about here at LRUK! Providing hands-on, educational toys, games and resources to teachers, parents and educational professionals is at the heart of what we do, visit www.LearningResources.co.uk to have a look! Our products tap into children’s natural curiosity. From maths to science to literacy, lessons come to life in three dimensions, sparking an interactive learning process. Using hands-on learning resources, children take ownership of their learning.

We recently celebrated our 20th Anniversary, and what a lovely celebration it was too. Our Managing Director, Dennis, has been with the company since it was founded in 1994, and amongst other festivities was presented with a rather trendy lamp for the desk in his office here in Norfolk!

image

Dennis is certainly the key to driving our passion for kinaesthetic learning, wanting to add an “aha!” element to each and every one of our products. He believes there’s a moment that will make any parent or teachers’ day; the moment when a child’s eyes light up as they finally understand a concept, or solve a problem - the “aha” moment!

From our 20th Anniversary and beyond we’re looking to the future, at the next 20 years of Learning Resources UK and the help and support we can continue to provide teachers, parents and everyone who’s passionate about education, just like us! Our hands-on learning approach isn’t new, but it’s the way we learn from the moment we are born, by moving and manipulating the world around us we make sense of how things work. Study after study have proved this, and more importantly children have proved it too. We understand the challenges that children and teachers face, and every solution we create is designed to help children unlock a greater understanding, from their first day at preschool.

We’re proud of where we’ve been, and we’re excited about where we’re going! We hope we can help you discover “aha” moments with your little ones! Keep an eye out for future blog posts on developments, excitement and celebrations at LRUK.

Until next time…
